Leadership Paterson’s 2014-15 Class Schedule

Meetings are held the last Tuesday of the Month with the exception of December which has been shifted to accommodate the Holidays.

Paterson’s Glorious History: Silk Mills and Manufacturing, Cultures, Emigrant Communities, etc. Was Paterson’s history really glorious? Can it be glorious again? This session will involve a discussion, and/or tour of what will encompass the Great Falls National Park.

Education: An In-depth look at the education system in the city of Paterson. Will involve a visit to high-achieving and low achieving schools in the district, a discussion with the Superintendent of Schools, as well as members of the Board of Education. Are we doing right by the children and community stakeholders? What needs improvement?

Health and Human Services: A Tour and Visit of Paterson’s only Hospital, St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center and discussions with social services agencies on the community needs and their services. Are they dupli­cating services? Working together? Where do they need help?

Crime and Its Costs: Includes a Tour of Northern State Prison, an open discussion with the Paterson Police Chief, and our County Prosecutor. How are we doing? Are Paterson’s children lost? Quality of life issues and petty crimes will also be addressed. We will particularly look to address the issue of public safety as it relates to the number of police on the force and recent lay-offs.

Housing: The Director of the Housing Authority hosts the group on tours of the public housing complex­es, and the services provided. How the housing of lower income and no-income families is changing/improving. What still needs to be done? Is there a market rate housing stock in the City.

The Media and How Paterson is Covered: Includes a visit to The Herald News and open discussion with their community editor. How do they gauge what is newsworthy? What other mediums are relevant? Internet vs. Print. How are we getting our news. (This session is combined with the Faith-based session.) Faith Based Initi­ates: Visits and discussion with faith based leaders in their facilities, as well as faith based community develop­ment corporations. What needs are they addressing?

Government And Politics: A visit with local politicians including the Mayor, City Council President, Freeholder Director, Assemblyman or woman, Senator, Congressman and a discussion lead by the Chair of the Joint Governmental Affairs Committee. How does Government function in Paterson?

The Environment: Discussing the challenges of “Dirty Land” in the City of Paterson. Session lead by two local environmental leaders. Will present a hypothetical town meeting presenting a development on a contro­versial land mass. How would you react? Would you support it? Oppose it? We will explore the purpose of the DEP.

Economic Development: Issues such as the State of the UEZ will be addressed. We will visit with larger and small-sized businesses in Paterson to learn what their obstacles and benefits of doing business in Paterson are. What are the major or minor economic development projects happening or in the pipeline in Paterson. May include a discussion with Mayor. How are jobs being created in the City of Paterson? What issues prevent eco­nomic development from projects from happening. Is Tourism the next big thing in Paterson?
